Records from a Vanishing City

The October Masterworks program is about folk music, memory and heritage, opening with contemporary composer Jessie Montgomery’s “Records from a Vanishing City,” a piece inspired by the composer’s experiences growing up in New York City’s Lower East Side. Internationally renowned pianist Natasha Paremski performs Edvard Grieg’s beloved Piano Concerto in A, which contains a wealth of Norwegian folk music influences. The program concludes with Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 7, composed to reflect the struggles of the Czech nation in the late 19th century.

Eugene Symphony

Hult Center for the Performing Arts (map)

Records from a Vanishing City

Few other composers have captured our imaginations like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, whose tragically short life yielded masterpieces that astonish the mind and awaken the soul. Hear his unfinished Requiem, perhaps finally as he intended, as completed by modern Mozart expert Robert Levin. The evening also features two of our own Eugene Symphony musicians in Antonio Vivaldi’s sparkling Concerto for Two Cellos, and young American composer Jessie Montgomery’s poignant remembrance of a friend and commemoration of the music that infused her youth in Manhattan.

Caught By the Wind

Inspired by the winds that helped propel a thousand-mile cycling journey, Jessie Montgomery’s Caught by The Wind opens the evening with a powerful meditation on the cycle of life. Lexington-native Richard Deane, Principal Horn of the New York Philharmonic, returns to his hometown orchestra as soloist for Strauss’ Horn Concerto No. 1. Deane grew up playing in the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra, and attending Lexington Philharmonic concerts. Brahms’ delightful Symphony No. 2, which famously recycles his well-known “Brahms’ Lullaby,” tops off an evening of works both powerful and ebullient.
