Music can be created and enjoyed regardless of wealth or status. Composer Jessie Montgomery has devoted her career to dismantling barriers in music pedagogy and pushing back against the hypocrisy of the privileged. Such ‘woke’ ideas are not new – 350 years ago, playwright Molière did exactly this in his play Le Bourgeois gentilhomme, later on inspiring Strauss’ sardonic suite of the same name.

Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster, David Kim, unearths provocative truths in a program which is by turns satirical and profound.

“There are those who think it’s a pain in the butt to have to diversify their programming. It’s understandable. I wish it wasn’t a problem. I wish I  didn’t feel like I have things to prove. But now those doors have been opened, I feel honoured to bring my voice into the conversation” – Jessie Montgomery
