Join us for a symphonic exploration of the ideals we strive for as a country and community, united by hope.
For one night only, the National Symphony Orchestra proudly presents Here I Stand: Paul Robeson, a new commission by Kennedy Center Composer-in-Residence Carlos Simon and librettist Dan Harder written to honor the great American singer, actor, and activist.
The son of a runaway slave turned schoolteacher, Paul Robeson (1898–1976) was not only a distinguished artist but also a scholar, athlete, and lawyer. As his career ushered him around the globe, Robeson became a passionate and outspoken advocate of civil rights.
This new dramatic oratorio depicts scenes from Robeson’s life and work through powerful ballads like “Joe Hill,” spirituals “Go Down, Moses” and “I Know I’ve Been Changed,” and more performed by the NSO, bass-baritone Morris Robinson, and The Washington Chorus.
Eugene Rogers conducts this NSO premiere and more rousing songs and stories that celebrate and challenge the American narrative. The evening opens with Banner, Jessie Montgomery’s a revolutionary anthem for the 21st century; “Simple Gifts” and more beloved selections from Aaron Copland’s Old American Songs; and the iconic suite from Billy the Kid.
