About the Concert
Tonight is an evening of fireworks and exuberance, when musical flares share the stage with a trumpet shooting star and colorful Spanish flamenco.
Wynton Marsalis takes us on a spectacular journey through the trumpet’s many stylistic facets—from military fanfares to the diverse colors of the blues, from soloistic virtuosity to lyrical singing qualities, from Mexican mariachi to Eastern European klezmer and American bebop. All of this is masterfully and beautifully performed by the new Austrian superstar and trumpet virtuoso Selina Ott, in the Norwegian premiere of this concerto, considered an extreme sport for trumpeters.
De Falla’s ballet music for The Three-Cornered Hat is both vividly colorful and captivating, clearly inspired by the modal folk music of Andalusia and fiery Spanish folk dances such as the seguidilla, flamenco, and jota.
With Starburst, Jessie Montgomery depicts a musical stellar explosion, where rapidly shifting tone colors form a backdrop for fleeting melodies and powerful motion.
